FDA warns – Wine Country Gift Baskets with Quaker Chewy Granola Bars recalled due to potential Salmonella contamination

Fullerton, California-based Houdini, Inc. has voluntarily recalled all of its Wine Country Gift Baskets containing Quaker Chewy Granola Bars because the granola bars may be contaminated with the Salmonella organism. The precautionary measure follows Quaker Oats’ own recent recall of the product.

While healthy individuals infected with Salmonella may only experience short-term symptoms like “fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain,” the infection has been known to turn serious and sometimes fatal in those with weakened immune systems, including young children and elderly people. In rare cases, a Salmonella infection could advance into an an organism entering the bloodstream, resulting in more severe conditions like arterial infections (as in the case of infected aneurysms), endocarditis, and arthritis.

The company notes that while no illnesses in connection to the issue has been reported to date, the recall was initiated to mitigate risks to the consumer.

Announced on December 19, 2023, the recall covers gift baskets that were distributed nationwide through Amazon.com and other online sales. Consumers can determine whether they have a recalled item by taking the following steps:

  • Verify that the gift basket in question is from the #8700 Ministry of Snacks Sweet and Savory Collection
  • Locate the white label with black print on the bottom of the basket
  • Identify the Lot Code number, which is distinguished by “LC” followed by six digits.
    • Check for the following affected lot codes: LC 595922, LC 596339, LC 597305, LC 597306, LC 597910, LC601543 and LC 607376.
