FDA warns – Varieties of mooncake gift boxes recalled by Sheng Kee of California, Inc. due to undeclared egg

According to the FDA, as many as ten varieties of Sheng Kee of California Mooncake Gift Boxes is being covered by a voluntary recall announced by the company on September 11, 2023, due to the potential presence of egg, an allergen not declared on packaging.

Those with an allergy to egg are warned that they may experience a serious, possibly life-threatening allergic reaction if they ingest the products.

Distributed via retail stores and mail orders across the United States, the products are packaged in glossy paper gift boxes that come in multiple colors and bearing a variety of images. The expiration date, along with the ingredient statement, can be found on the bottom of each box.

Sheng Kee of California, Inc. took action after officials learned that the packaging for the egg-containing mooncakes does not list egg as an allergen. A temporary disruption in the company’s production and packaging protocols was cited as the cause of the issue.

Following the discovery, the Sheng Kee of California, Inc. says it is collaborating with its wholesalers and retail partners to have the current gift boxes re-labeled and re-fitted.
