FDA warns – Various packages of “Asafoetida” Vandevi Yellow powder recalled due to potential undeclared wheat

Kinjin Food Pvt. Ltd., of Maharashtra, India, has recalled its “Asafoetida” Vandevi Yellow powder in 50 gm, 100 gm, 200 gm, 500 gm, and 1 kg packages because the product could be contain traces of wheat, an allergen not listed in the product’s ingredient list.

Those with an allergy or sensitivity to wheat are advised that they could suffer a major, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction if they eat the products.

Initiated by Kinjin Food Pvt. Ltd. on January 17, 2024, the “Asafoetida” products were distributed to, and made available for purchase, in mail orders across the country.

To confirm whether a given product falls under the recall, consumers should identify the batch number, a product’s particular size, and its expiry date, as noted in the provided table.

As demonstrated in the photos included in the FDA communication, the product comes in a yellow plastic bottle bearing a pale blue label and any of the following UPC:

  • 50g-8906044469013
  • 100g-8906044469020
  • 200g-8906044469037
  • 500g-8906044469044
  • 1kg-8906044469051

Consumers should be able to identify an affected product by the batch number, quantity, and expiration date printed on the product label.

Officials said they first took action after learning that the product was made at a plant where wheat products have also been processed, as the product packaging does not indicate the potential trace presence of wheat; a failure to declare the wheat as an allergen puts the product out of compliance with the declaration labeling requirements of FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act).

As the company works with the FDA to resolve the issue, all export and distribution of the product has been temporarily suspended.

While no related illness have been reported following the discovery of the problem, anyone who may have purchased an affected product of “Asafoetida” and the Vandevi Yellow powder is urged to take them back to the place of purchase to receive a complete refund. Further questions may be directed to Kinjin Food at operations@kinjinfood.com and via phone at +919819003276 by asking for Mr. Hiren Thakkar from -12:00 a.m. EDT to 7:00 a.m. EDT.

A complete list of the affected batches, along with their associated pack sizes and expiration dates, can be found in the FDA announcement.
