FDA Warns – Undeclared milk ingredients prompt recall of Lidl US’s Taste of Deutschland Buttered Vegetables

Late last month, the American grocery chain Lidl US recalled all lots of their Taste of Deutschland Buttered Vegetables after finding that milk had been omitted from the ingredient list. The FDA published notice of the recall on December 20, 2024.

The Taste of Deutschland Buttered Vegetables 10.5 oz (UPC # 4056489122876) were sold in green cardboard boxes in the freezer section of Lidl grocery stores in 10 states in the U.S., including DE, DC, GA, MD, NJ, NY, NC, PA, SC, and VA. Lidle distributed the product between October 21, 2023 and December 19, 2024. At this time, the product no longer appears on store shelves, but customers should check their freezers.

At this time, Lidl US has not received any reports of illness or injury connected to their Taste of Deutschland Buttered Vegetables. The company recalled the product after an FDA inspection determined that milk-based ingredients were not appropriately disclosed on the product label. As noted by the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 requires all companies to disclose milk and milk-derived products on all packaged food items. Milk allergies are common and can cause multiple symptoms, including skin rash, gastrointestinal upset, vomiting, blood in the stool, and in the most serious cases, anaphylaxis. Without prompt treatment, anaphylaxis can cause death.

At this time, Lidl US has not specified what might have caused the packaging error resulting in undisclosed milk ingredients in their Taste of Deutschland Buttered Vegetables. The company insists that they are committed to consumer safety and to rectifying any production issues that undermine that safety.

Lidl advises consumers to refrain from eating the recalled product and to return it to their local Lidl store for a full refund.
