FDA Warns – Turkana Food Inc. recalls 1 lot of Aleppo Tahini Sesame Paste after positive test for bacterial contaminant

According to the FDA, concerns about possible Salmonella contamination have prompted Turkana Food Inc. out of New Jersey to recall one lot of their Aleppo Tahini Sesame Paste. The company announced the recall on Thursday.

Turkana Food Inc. distributed the affected lot of Aleppo Tahini Sesame Paste, consisting of 858 cases of product, to 19 states in the U.S., including Florida, Kentucky, Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Texas, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maryland, Ohio, Alabama, Missouri, and California. The company has not provided the dates of distribution. The UPC for the product is 854643003054 with a Lot number of 120824-01. The recalled product has a “Best before” date of August, 2026.

Aleppo Tahini Sesame Paste is sold in a 16-ounce clear, plastic jar with a gold lid, a gold label, and black lettering. The label includes the brand and product names and lists the name of the distributor. Customers can find both the lot number and the “Best before” date stamped on the lid of the jar. The UPC code is affixed with a sticker to the side of the jar.

As of the date of the recall, Turkana Food Inc. has not received any reports of illness or injury linked to their Aleppo Sesame Paste. The company issued the recall after testing by the Ohio Department of Agriculture detected Salmonella in a sample of the product. Turkana has stopped production of the product while they locate and remedy the source of the contamination.

According to Cleveland Clinic, Salmonella is common source of food poisoning in the United States. Symptoms of infection typically include gastrointestinal pain with diarrhea and fever. Most people are at low-risk for serious illness, but very young children, the elderly, and those who are immunocompromised may be at risk for more serious complications, such as severe dehydration, reactive arthritis, sepsis, or osteomyelitis.

Turkana Food Inc. advises customers who have purchased the recalled tahini paste to refrain from eating it and to return the product to the point of purchase for a full refund.

Anyone with questions or concerns about the recall can contact Turkana Food Inc. Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (EST)  at (908) 810-8800 or by email at info@turkanafood.com.
