FDA warns – Tipical Latin Food Corp cites labeling issue, undeclared wheat in recall of Cachapa de Maiz sweet corn pancakes

A labeling error prompted Tipical Latin Food Corp of Miami to recall an unknown number of lots of their Cachapa de Maiz sweet corn pancakes, reports the FDA. The company says the label does not list wheat, which is an ingredient present in the product.

The recalled Cachapa de Maiz sweet corn pancakes are sold under the brand name of Los Andes Foods. The lot number for the recalled products range between 2622404 to 2772412. Tipical Latin Food Corp distributed the pancakes to Trimar USA LLC. out of Miami for wholesale and retail sales. Thus far, the company has not specified the expiration date(s) for the recalled product, nor have they indicated how widely the product may have been distributed by Trimar USA. The Cachapa de Maiz sweet corn pancakes are sold in a clear, vacuum-sealed plastic wrapper with a yellow label.

Tipical Latin Food Corp has not received any reports of illness or injury in connection to the recalled product. The company determined that the labels for the Cachapa de Maiz sweet corn pancakes were printed without the inclusion of wheat in the list of ingredients even though wheat is an ingredient in the sweet corn pancakes. It’s not yet clear what caused the mistake in the company’s labeling process.

Consumption of wheat can caused illness or injury in people who have a wheat allergy or sensitivity. According to the Mayo Clinic, an allergic reaction can include symptoms that range from mild to serious. Symptoms might include abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, congestion, headache, skin rash, swelling or irritation in the mouth or throat, and in more serious cases, anaphylaxis. Without prompt medical attention, anaphylaxis can be fatal.

Tipical Latin Food Corp urges customers with a wheat allergy or sensitivity to refrain from eating the recalled product and to call Trimar USA LLC at 786-703-6161 for instructions on returning the product for a full refund.
