FDA Warns – Testing confirms probable Salmonella contamination, prompts recall of 1 lot of Blue Ridge Beef’s 2-pound Kitten Mix logs

Shortly after the new year, Blue Ridge Beef out of North Carolina announced a recall of 675 logs of their 2-pound Kitten Mix. According to the FDA, the product tested positive for Salmonella contamination.

Blue Ridge Beef initiated the recall on January 3, indicating that it applies only to Lot N25-0716 of their Kitten Mix 2-pound logs (UPC 854298001436). The product was sold in clear packaging with a blue, white, and purple label featuring the Blue Ridge Beef logo, the product name, and the list of ingredients. The company distributed Lot N25-0716 between the dates of July 18, 2024, and July 26, 2024, to six states in the U.S., including VA, MD, PA, CT, MA and NY. The item no longer appears on retail shelves, but customers may have leftover logs in their freezers. The lot number appears on the clips at the ends of the log.

The company received at least one complaint of animal illness, which prompted testing in mid-December through the Massachusetts Department of Agriculture Resources. The affected lot of Blue Ridge Beef’s Kitten Mix tested positive for Salmonella on January 3rd, 2025. No other Blue Ridge Beef products were included in the recall.

Salmonella infection in cats can cause a variety of symptoms, including gastrointestinal discomfort, bloody stools, vomiting, fatigue, fever, and reduced appetite. Some infected cats are asymptomatic but capable of spreading Salmonella infection to people and other animals. Any animal that shows signs of illness after eating the recalled product should be checked by a veterinarian.

Infection can spread to humans if they have contact with an infected animal or their feces, or if they touch the contaminated food and fail to wash their hands and disinfect contaminated surfaces. Symptoms of Salmonella infection in humans are similar to those experienced by animals, but humans are capable of more serious infection. In rare instances, humans infected by Salmonella can develop “arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.” Anyone with prolonged or particularly pronounced symptoms of illness should visit their doctor.

Blue Ridge Beef advises customers to dispose of all Kitten Mix logs from the recalled lot and to disinfect any surfaces that came in contact with the contaminated food. Customers can also return the recalled product to the point of purchase.

Anyone with questions or concerns about the recall can contact Blue Ridge Beef at (704) 873-2072 or by email at blueridgebeefnc@yahoo.com.
