Pine Brook, New Jersey-based Sunco & Frenchie LLC has recalled its 6-ounce plastic containers of Macadamia in the Raw, labeled under the Terrafina brand, because of a potential Salmonella contamination, reports the FDA.
Officials say healthy individuals infected with the organism typically experience short-term symptoms like fever, (possibly bloody) diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and pain in the abdomen. In young children, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems, the infection may turn serious and potentially fatal. In circumstances more rare, the Salmonella organism may enter the bloodstream, which could cause other more advanced illnesses that include arterial infections (like in the case of infected aneurysms), endocarditis, as well as arthritis.
Initiated by Sunco & Frenchie LLC on June 28, 2024, the recall covers packages of Terrafina brand Macadamia in the Raw that were distributed by Oak Foods LLC and made available for purchase at retail stores in New York.
The raw macadamia nuts, which were manufactured by SolCaribe, S.A. in Costa Rica, come in square-shaped 6-ounce plastic containers. A white label on the lid and a light-green label along the side together together bear a printed “best by” date of 05/2025 and Lot #RMA241201, as well as UPC (Universal Product Code) 847938003570. The product’s distributor, Oak Foods LLC, of Bronx NY 10474, can also be identified on the nutrition label.
Company officials were first alerted to the possible Salmonella contamination after routine testing conducted by the State of New York Department of Agriculture and Markets Food Laboratory. All affected products are under recall pending an investigation by the FDA and Sunco & Frenchie LLC.
While the company has not received any reports of illness in connection to the problem to date, anyone who may have purchased the product is urged to refrain from consuming it. The item should either be discarded as soon as possible or returned to the point of purchase to receive a complete refund.
