FDA Warns – Supplier substitution results in undeclared soy, prompting TS Food Packaging to recall popcorn seasonings

Last Friday, TS Food Packaging out of Wisconsin announced a recall of 11 lots total of their Rural King Bacon Flavor Popcorn Seasoning and their Wasbash Valley Farms Bacon Flavor Popcorn Seasoning. The FDA attributes the recall to undeclared soy in the product.

The company recalled three lots of their 4.2-ounce Bacon Flavor Popcorn Seasoning (Lot Numbers: 17324s, 27824s, and 30324s) and eight lots of their 1-ounce samples (Lot Numbers: 16524SP, 16624SP, 23424SP, 26324SP, 26424SP, 26724SP, 20624S, and 20724S). The products were distributed both online and via retailers throughout the United States. TS Food Packaging has not referenced the specific dates of distribution for the impacted lots.

The Wabash Valley Farms Bacon Popcorn Seasoning is packaged in a plastic jar with a gold label and white lettering. The label features an image of popcorn layered among three strips of bacon. Rural King Bacon Flavor Popcorn Seasoning comes packaged in a plastic jar with a white label and black lettering. Customers can find the lot numbers printed on the back of the product labels.

As of the date of the recall, TS Food Packaging had not received any reports of adverse reactions linked to the recalled popcorn seasonings. The company recalled the products when an internal review noted the presence of soy in an ingredient substituted by one of their suppliers. Appropriate measures are now being taken to ensure that all packaging processes are updated when substitutions are made.

According to Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE), soy is one of the eight most common allergens. For this reason, in the United States, companies are required by law to label foods containing soy. Serious reactions to soy are rare but can occur in patients with a severe allergy to soy. In the most serious cases, consumption of soy can cause anaphylaxis in people with a soy allergy. Anaphylaxis typically requires prompt treatment with epinephrine. Without prompt treatment, an anaphylactic reaction can be fatal.

TS Food Packaging encourages customers who have purchased the recalled seasoning to return it to the point of purchase for a full refund.

Anyone with questions or concerns about the recall can contact the company by phone at (262) 763-9434 between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (CST) or via email at mail@tsfoodpackaging.com.
