FDA warns – Single lot of .39-oz/11-g Potato Chip Mini Chocolate Bar recalled due to undeclared hazelnut

A single production lot (Lot 4022) of .39-ounce/11-gram Potato Chip Mini Chocolate Bar has been recalled by Chuao Chocolatier the products are believed to contain hazelnut, an allergen not listed on the packaging’s ingredient panel.

Individuals who live with an allergy or sensitivity to hazelnut are advised against consuming the product to avoid a risk of major, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.

Initiated by the company on May 3, 2024, the voluntary recall only covers Lot 4022 of the Chuao Chocolatier Potato Chip Mini Chocolate Bar in .39 ounces. The product was distributed and made available for purchase in retail stores, as well as online, across the country, except for Hawaii and Arkansas. Consumers should note that no other products under the Chuao Chocolatier brand are impacted by the action.

Affected packages of the product can be found under UPC (Universal Product Code) 872629006615 and bear the Lot Code and “Best by” date “22 FEB 25 4022” under the back flap.

As can be seen in the product photos included in the FDA announcement, the package label does indicate that the product is “[m]anufactured in a facility that uses tree nuts and wheat on shared equipment,” but does not disclosed the presence of hazelnuts.

Officials said they learned that hazelnuts were accidentally included in the lot during manufacturing, which was then distributed in packaging that does not indicate the nut’s inclusion. Cross contamination from a single piece of shared equipment during the production was later found to be the source of the issue.

To date of the announcement, Chuao Chocolatier has received one customer report of mild allergic reaction connected to the consumption of the product.

The company asks consumers to reach out at (760) 814-6230 or via email at support@chuaochocolatier.com to access further details about the recall. Callers are able to reach the customer service line 24 hours a day, and consumer relations specialists monitor the line Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Pacific Time.

At this time, the FDA continues to oversee the recall.
