FDA warns – Single batch of St. Jerome cheese recalled by Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese due to potential Listeria contamination

Austin, Kentucky-based Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese has recalled batch 231129 of its St. Jerome cheese after routine testing conducted by the Kentucky Department of Public Health showed the organism Listeria monocytogenes to be present in a single package, reports the FDA.

While healthy people infected with Listeria typically experience short-lived symptoms like “high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea,” the infection has been known to turn serious and sometimes deadly in those whose immune systems may be weakened, such as young children and elderly individuals. Pregnant woman infected with Listeria could suffer miscarriages and stillbirths.

Announced by the company on July 24, 2024, the recall covers St. Jerome cheese that was distributed by wholesale and retail partners, as well as via the Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese website.

Affected products come in two different sizes: an 8-ounce wedge or a full 15-pound wheel. As pictured in the FDA announcement, both variations are wrapped in clear plastic and can be identified by a logo sticker, and with the product ingredients listed on the top, as well as with lot number 231129 printed on a white label along the edge.

While Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheese has not received any reports of infection or other illness related to the recall to date, all production of the product has been halted at this time. Officials say the company is working with the FDA to determine the origin of the contamination.

Anyone who may have purchased a St. Jerome cheese product from the recalled lot is asked to either dispose of it or return it to the point of purchase for a complete refund. Further questions may be directed to the company at 1-270-434-4124 or via email at kenny@kennyscheese.com. Calls and emails are monitored Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
