The health and beauty company Shoppers-Plaza of California announced a recall of all lots of their Fouzee SugarLin Herbal Formula. According to the announcement published this week by the FDA, the product contains undeclared pharmaceutical drugs.
Fouzee SugarLin Herbal Formula capsules were sold and distributed in a white plastic bottle with a teal label. Each bottle contains 180 capsules. The label advertises that the product can be used to increase energy levels, to support the body’s natural functioning, and to promote a healthy weight. Per the FDA, the product was marketed as a blood sugar stabilizer. Shoppers-Plaza sold the product throughout the United States via their online platform. Customers may also have purchased the product through retail stores and other online platforms.
At this time, Shoppers-Plaza has not reported any injuries connected to the recalled product. The FDA required the recall because Fouzee SugarLin Herbal Formula was found to contain both metformin and glyburide, neither of which are listed as ingredients on the label for the supplement. Metformin is a component of many prescription medications used to stabilize blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. Use of metformin requires approval from a health care provider and monitoring because serious side effects are possible. Patients taking other blood sugar medications could develop low blood sugar. And in rare instances, patients taking metformin can develop dangerous “build-up of lactic acid in the blood.” Without prompt treatment, this build-up of lactic acid can be fatal.
The second drug, blyburide, is also used in prescription medications for type 2 diabetes, and as with metformin, can cause “unsafe drops in blood sugar,” especially when used in conjunction with other drugs designed to lower blood sugar. Significantly low blood sugar can ultimately lead to “seizures, coma, or death” when left untreated. Again, use of medications containing blyburide requires a prescription and ongoing monitoring by a health care professional.
Anyone who may have purchased Fouzee SugarLin Herbal Forumla capsules should stop using the supplement immediately. Shoppers-Plaza plans to contact all customers and distributors to arrange for the prompt return of and full refund for the product.

Patients and health care providers can report any new and adverse health events related to taking Fouzee SugarLin Herbal Formula through the FDA’s MedWatch Online Voluntary Reporting Form.
