New York, New York-based Roland Foods, LLC (“Roland Foods”) has recalled one production code of its 16-ounce Roland® Tahini (100% Ground Sesame Seeds) because the product may contain a trace of Salmonella, reports the FDA.
In healthy people, a Salmonella infection may give way to symptoms like “fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.” In those with weakened immune systems like young children and elderly individuals, the infection has been known to turn serious and sometimes fatal. In other, rarer situations, a Salmonella infection could lead to the organism entering the bloodstream, creating dangerous conditions for severe illnesses that include “arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
Announced by Roland Foods, LLC on February 27, 2024, the recall covers Roland® Tahini (100% Ground Sesame Seeds) 16 oz. bottles that were distributed to retail stores and other foodservice venues across multiple U.S. states between September 2023 and January 2024.
As pictured in the product photo attached to the FDA announcement, an affected product can be identified by the following:
- Batch Number: P024581
- Production Code: X0419
- UPC Number: 10041224701509
- “Best By” Date: October 19, 2024
Consumers should note that the UPC can be found beneath the bar code printed on the back of the bottle. The associated Production Code and Best Buy Date can also be found on the label near the bottle’s top.
Officials say a routine sampling conducted by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development indicated the product was positive for Salmonella, prompting the recall. Since then, all distribution of the product has been suspended as the company works with its manufacturing partner to identify the source of the problem.
Although the company has not been alerted to any related reports of illness to date, anyone who may be in possession of a Roland® Tahini (100% Ground Sesame Seeds) 16 oz. is asked to dispose of the item.
