FDA Warns – Reser’s Fine Foods recalls Sprouts’ Gyro Family Kits containing cucumbers at risk for Salmonella contamination

In conjunction with a larger nationwide recall of cucumbers, Reser’s Fine Food has issued a recall for their Sprouts Farmers Market Gyro Family Kits. According to the FDA, the company issued the recall on Monday, December 9th.

The recall applies to Sprouts Farmers Market Gyro Family Kits with “Use by” dates that fall between December 29, 2024 and January 7, 2025. Sprouts stores sells the Gyro Family Kit (UPC# 20594800000) on a black plastic tray with a clear lid. The tray includes pita bread, gyro meat, sliced cucumbers, sliced tomatoes, sliced onions, feta sauce, and tzatziki sauce. Customers can find the “Use by” or “Sell by” date printed in the upper left corner of the product label. The recalled kits were distributed to Sprouts stores in 24 states in the U.S., including Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Deleware, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming.

Reser’s Fine Foods has not received any reports of illness connected to their Gyro Family Kits. The company initiated the recall after learning of potential Salmonella contamination in the cucumbers sourced for the tzatziki sauce in the meal kits. According to the FDA, the source of the contamination is likely the grower, who has been identified as Agrotato, S.A. de C.V. of Sonora, Mexico. Eleven companies have recalled products containing cucumbers sourced from this grower. At least 68 people have been sickened by consuming the contaminated cucumbers in other products.

Infection with Salmonella typically causes gastrointestinal upset with possible fever, vomiting, and diarrhea in people with healthy immune systems. Hospitalization is sometimes necessary, especially for very small children, the elderly, and the immunocompromised. Infections in these vulnerable populations can be more serious. Fatalities are possible.

Anyone who may have purchased a Gyro Family Kit from Sprouts Farmers Market with a “Use by” date between 12/29/24 and 1/7/25 should throw the product away or return it to the store for a full refund.

Anyone with questions or concerns about the recall can contact Sprouts Customer Relations at sprouts.com/contact.
