Concerns about possible E. Coli contamination have prompted Fabalish Inc. to recall their “Kickin” Carrot Falafel Bites. The FDA published news of the recall on Wednesday, two days after the company issued their announcement.
Fabalish distributed their “Kickin” Carrot Falafel Bites to consumers in 18 states via online orders made through the company’s website. The states to which the product was distributed include Florida, New York, Washington, Tennessee, California, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, New Hampshire, Virginia, Georgia, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Kansas, Texas, Massachusetts, and Montana. The product is sold in a yellow and orange box that reads “Falafel Bites Baked With Fabulously Whole Veggies.” Customers can find the lot code for the product, which is 260925, on the top flap of the box.
While no illnesses have been reported so far, the recall is linked to a larger nationwide recall of organic carrots produced by Grimmway Farms, which is a supplier for the “Kickin” Carrot Falafel Bites. Grimmway Farms initiated their carrot recall after the EPA expressed concerns about possible contamination with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) O121:H19. Customers can read more about the Grimmway Farms’ carrot recall here.
According to the World Health Organization, the most common symptoms of infection with Shiga-toxin producing E. coli (STEC) are gastrointestinal distress with diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some people experience bloody diarrhea. In very young children, the elderly, or people with compromised immunity, STEC can be more concerning. In these populations, STEC can cause haemolytic uraemic syndrome, which ultimately leads to “acute renal failure, haemolytic anaemia and thrombocytopenia.”
Rather than returning the recalled product to the point of purchase, customers can email a picture of the box to orders@fablish.com to request a refund. The product should them be discarded.
Anyone with questions or concerns about the recall can contact Fabalish Inc. at (201) 942-2900, Monday to Friday from 10AM to 3PM EST.
