FDA Warns – Potential for undeclared milk prompts recall of Pearl Milling Company Original Pancake & Waffle Mix

The Quaker Oats Company out of Illinois has announced a recall of one of lot of their two-pound Pearl Milling Company Original Pancake & Waffle Mix. According to the FDA, the company initiated the recall after discovering undeclared milk in the product.

The Pearl Milling Company Original Pancake & Waffle Mix (UPC # 30000 65040) is sold in a red two-pound box with white and yellow lettering. The box features the brand and product names along with an image of the cooked product. Additionally, a yellow heart graphic encloses the slogan, “America’s favorite pancake brand.” The manufacturing code and “Best by date” printed on the top flap of the box is BBD SEP 13 25 P.

The Quaker Oats Company began distribution of the recalled mix as early as November 18, 2024, to retailers in several states, including AR, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, MN, MS, NE, UT, and WI. Customers who purchase this brand of pancake mix should check the “Best by date” to determine whether their mix is included in the recall, which was announced on Tuesday, January 14th.

Thus far, The Quaker Oats Company hasn’t received any reports of injury linked to the recalled Pearl Milling Company Original Pancake & Waffle Mix. The company says that a “retail partner” alerted them to a potential issue with undeclared milk in the pancake mix. There’s no word yet regarding the cause of the issue or the steps the company may be taking to rectify the problem.

As noted by the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, allergic reactions to milk often include symptoms such as congestion, wheezing, skin rash, bloody stool, and gastrointestinal upset. In rare but serious instances, an allergic reaction can cause anaphylaxis, and without prompt administration of epinephrine, anaphylaxis can be fatal. Because such serious reactions can occur, the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 requires companies to list milk ingredients on food products.

The Quaker Oats Company advises customers with a milk allergy or sensitivity to refrain from eating the recalled product.

Anyone with questions or concerns about the recall can contact Quaker Consumer Relations from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CST, Monday through Friday, at 1-800-407-2247.
