The nutritional supplement Orgain out of California issued a recall earlier this month for one lot of its 30g Protein Organic Plant Based Powder – Chocolate 2.01lb. According to the announcement posted on the FDA’s website, Orgain announced the recall due to concerns regarding possible peanut allergens in the product.
Initiated on December 19th, Orgain’s recall pertains only to Lot # 4172-02-P of the company’s plant-based, chocolate protein powder. Orgain distributed the product online and to retailers throughout the U.S. They’ve not yet provided the dates of distribution. The expiration date for the recalled lot is June 20, 2026. Orgain sells their chocolate-flavored, plant-based powder in a gray plastic bin with a blue label. The label features white lettering and reads, “Orgain 30g PLANT PROTEIN Complete Protein Powder,” and features an image of chocolate. Customers can find the lot number and expiration date printed on the bottom of the plastic tub.
It’s not yet clear if testing detected peanuts or peanut products in the recalled lot. Orgain received one report of an allergic reaction from a customer with peanut allergies. The company claims to have initiated the recall “out of an abundance of caution.” They say that no other injuries or adverse reactions have been reported and that a subsequent investigation of the production processes did not detect a source for the potential contamination. Orgain insists that no other products or lots are implicated in the recall.
According to Cleveland Clinic, allergic reactions to peanuts are the primary cause of anaphylaxis in people with peanut allergies. Aside from anaphylaxis, an allergic reaction to peanuts can cause skin rash; congestion; gastrointestinal upset with vomiting and diarrhea; swelling of the mouth, face, or airways; itchiness; sneezing; and wheezing. Left untreated, anaphylaxis can cause death.
Orgain urges customers in possession of the recalled lot to avoid further consumption of the product. Customers can contact the company with any concerns or for information about refunds.
