FDA warns – Pan de Racho, Panque, Tres Leches, Chocoflan, Pan Surtido recalled by Lara’s Bakery 3 LLC due to undeclared allergens

Marshalltown, Iowa-based Lara’s Bakery 3 LLC has recalled multiple products, including Pan de Racho, Panque, and Pan Surtido in various flavors, due to the presence of undeclared sesame seed, coconut, soy, wheat, milk, and egg.

Individuals who live with the above allergies or sensitivities are advised that they could suffer a major or life-threatening allergic reaction upon ingesting the mislabeled products.

Initiated by the company on December 5, 2023, the recall covers Pan de Racho, Panque, and Pan Surtido (“Concha, Cema, Polvoron, Flan, Chocoflan, Tres Leches, Tostado de Guatamala, Pan de Guatemala, Canasta, Garibaldi, Marianas, Muffin, Pan Fino, Pastel de Glass, Pan de Trigo, Puerco, Bolillo, Telera”) that were distributed and directly delivered to retail stores in Iowa and Wisconsin up until November 28, 2023.

As can be observed in the product photos included in the FDA announcement, Pan de Racho is packed individually in a clear, labeled plastic bag and is a sesame-containing product distinguished by colorful pink stripes. Panque also comes in a clear, individually-packed and labeled plastic bag. Flan, Chocoflan, and Tres Leches can be found in clear and labeled containers, while Pan Surtido comes in metal trays.

While Lara’s Bakery has not been made aware of any related illnesses to date, all production of the products were suspended pending a correction of the problem.

Officials took action after learning that sesame, coconut, soy, wheat, milk and egg-containing products were distributed and made available for purchase in packaging that failed to disclose the allergens in their ingredient lists. By the time of the discovery, the products had already been delivered to the retail stores.

Anyone who may have purchased an affected product is encouraged to return the product for a refund. Customers have the option of reaching a company representative at (641) 752-0152 or coming in person to Lara’s Bakery 3 headquarters at 701 North 3rd Avenue, Suite C, Marshalltown, Iowa 50158.
