FDA warns – Packaging error, undeclared wheat trigger recall of Sugar Foods’ Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips Santa Fe Style

A packaging error has led Sugar Foods to recall at least one lot of their Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips Santa Fe Style. According to the recall notice posted by the FDA, the company initiated the recall after determining the product contains undeclared wheat.

The Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips Santa Fe Style are sold in 3.5-ounce plastic pouches that feature the product name along with the slogan, “Add Flavorful Crunch to Southwest-Style Salads, Soups, and Bowls.” The UPC number for the recalled product is 7 87359 17504 6, and the “Best By” date for the recalled batch is June 20, 2024. Customers can find the UPC and the “Best By” date on the back of the pouch. Sugar Foods distributed the product between September 30th and November 11th to 22 states in the U.S., including Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Maine, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington.

As of November 22nd, Sugar Foods had not received any reports of illness or injury in connection to the recalled product. The company recalled the Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips Santa Fe Style after a customer complained about receiving the wrong product. Upon further investigation, the company determined that the recalled pouches included Fresh Gourmet Crispy Onions rather than Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips. Unlike the strips, the crispy onions contain wheat ingredients. As a result of a packaging error, the recalled product contains undeclared wheat and could present a danger to individuals with a wheat allergy or sensitivity.

As noted by Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE), wheat allergies are common enough that federal raw requires companies to list the ingredient on packaged foods. An allergic reaction to wheat might cause skin rash, swelling, congestion, gastrointestinal symptoms, and difficulty breathing. In rare cases, an allergic reaction to wheat can result in anaphylaxis, which can be deadly without prompt treatment.

Sugar Foods advises customers to discard of the recalled product or return it to the point of purchase for a full refund.

Anyone with questions or concerns about the recall can contact Sugar Foods Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST at (332) 240-6676. Alternately, the company can be reached via email at Customerfeedback@sugarfoods.com.
