According to the FDA, Con Yeager Spice Company is recalling one lot of Trail Bologna Meat Processing Kits due to a packing error that resulted in undeclared wheat and soy in the product. The company announced the recall on Monday, October 21.
The limited recall applies to Con Yeager’s Trail Bologna Meat Processing Kits from lot number B241851006 with a UPC code of 797442404137. The “Best by” date for the product is 2-08-27. The kits are sold in 17.88-bags with brown and orange coloring. The product name is printed along with the brand name on the front of the bag above a graphic featuring a deer in a forest. Consumers can find the lot number and best by date stamped on the front of the bag. The impacted product was sold via the company’s website, https://www.conyeagerspice.com, to customers and retailers throughout the United States.
Con Yeager Spice Company has not received any reports of illness in connection to the product. After receiving a complaint, the company determined that the Trail Bologna Meat Processing Kits from the affected lot actually contained the contents of the company’s Hickory Jerky kit. Unlike the Trail Bologna kit, the Hickory Jerky kit contains both wheat and soy. Con Yeager says that a packaging error caused the problem. They have paused production of the product to locate and remedy the source of the issue.
According to Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE), federal law requires that both wheat and soy ingredients, along with ingredients linked to six other common allergens, be disclosed on all packaged foods. Soy allergies are less common in adults and typically involve mild reactions, though more serious reactions are possible in people with a severe allergy. Wheat allergies are much more common and can cause “symptoms involving the skin, gastrointestinal tract, respiratory system, and anaphylaxis,” depending on the severity of the sensitivity or allergy. In those with a severe allergy to wheat, anaphylactic reactions can be life-threatening.
Con Yeager Spice Company urges customers who have purchased kits from the recalled lot to contact the company to arrange for a refund or a replacement. The company also urges distributors to notify them of any additional packing errors in their inventory of Con Yeager products.
Customers with questions about the recall can contact Con Yeager Spice Company from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. EDT, Monday through Friday, at 724-202-6513.
