FDA Warns – Packaging error results in undeclared sesame, leading La Fiesta Food Products to recall Pan Rayado bread crumbs

On Saturday, the discovery of an undeclared allergen prompted La Fiesta Food Products, LLC to recall five lots total of their La Fiesta Pan Rayado Bread Crumbs and two lots of their Pan Rayado Sazonado Bread Crumbs. The FDA published notice of the recall on Tuesday.

La Fiesta Food Products, LLC distributed both types of bread crumbs to retailers nationwide. More than 26,000 packages of the unseasoned bread crumbs (Pan Rayado; UPC# 032327000886) were distributed from April 10, 2024 to January 22, 2025. More than 6,000 packages of the seasoned bread crumbs (Pan Rayado Sazonado; UPC# 032327000887) were distributed between August 29, 2024 and January 22, 2025. The relevant lot numbers for the Pan Rayado are 26032, 26073, 26082, 26092, and 26094. The lot numbers for the recalled Pan Rayado Sazonado are 26094 and 26123.

Both types of bread crumbs come packaged in an 8-ounce, clear plastic bag with red and white lettering on a yellow label at the top. The lot code is stamped on the front of the package, while the UPC can be found alongside the bar code on the back of the label. Ingredients for the products are printed in both English and Spanish.

Thus far, La Fiesta Food Products has not received an reports of illness or allergic reaction linked to the recalled breadcrumbs. The company initiated the recall after learning that sesame had been omitted from the ingredient list on the product labels. La Fiesta Food Products attributed to issue to a packaging error.

According to Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE), sesame is the ninth most common allergen in the United States. Since 2023, companies are required to list sesame ingredients on the labels of packaged foods. Allergic reactions to sesame can range from mild to severe. In the most serious instances, consumption of sesame can cause a person with a sesame allergy to experience anaphylactic shock. Without prompt administration of epinephrine, anaphylaxis can be fatal.

La Fiesta Food Products encourages customers who have purchased the recalled products to return them to the point of purchase for a full refund.
