FDA Warns – Packaging error results in undeclared egg, leads to recall of 2 lots of My Mochi Peach Mango Sorbet

A temporary packaging error prompted My Mochi Ice Cream Company LLC to recall two lots of their Peach Mango Sorbet last week. According to the FDA, the impacted product may contain undeclared egg white, presenting a danger for people with egg allergies and sensitivities.

The California-based company issued the recall on Thursday, January 9th. The lots included in the recall are 337-24 and 341-24. My Mochi Ice Cream Company sells their Peach Mango Sorbet in an orange, 6.5-ounce box, each of which contains six containers of sorbet. My Mochi distributed the sorbet via retail stores throughout the U.S. The company has not provided an expiration date, but they say customers can find the relevant lot numbers marked on each case of sorbet.

My Mochi Ice Cream Company has received two reports of allergic reactions thus far. They say the sorbet contains pasteurized and cooked egg white, which is not included in the ingredient list for the recalled lots. According to Mayo Clinic, egg allergies are very common, especially in children. Most reactions are relatively mild and can include symptoms such as congestion, skin rash, swelling of the lips and mouth, gastrointestinal upset, and asthma symptoms. Less commonly, a reaction to eggs can cause anaphylaxis in people with an egg allergy. Without prompt treatment, which usually involves the administration of an epinephrine shot, anaphylaxis can be fatal.

After receiving reports of allergic reactions, My Mochi Ice Cream Company launched an investigation and determined that a temporary breakdown in the packaging process resulted in the labelling issue. Going forward, all lots of the company’s Peach Mango Sorbet should clearly indicate the presence of egg whites in the product.

My Mochi urges customers who have purchased sorbet from a recalled lot to return the product to the point of purchase for a full refund.
