FDA Warns – Packaging error results in undeclared cashews, prompting recall of Gardners Candies’ Cappucino Meltaway® Bars

Shortly after Christmas, Gardners Candies out of Pennsylvania issued a recall for three lots of candies containing their Cappuccino Meltaway® Bars. According to the FDA, a packaging issue caused the omission of cashews from the product’s ingredient list.

Gardners Candies announced the recall on Friday, December 27th. The recalled products include one lot of the 1.25 ounce Cappuccino Meltaway® Bars (Lot number 082725) and two lots of the Gardners Meltaway Treat Boxes (Lot numbers 101625 and 112525). The latter product contains two Cappucino Meltaway® Bars along with other varieties of Gardners candy products. The 1.25 Cappuccino Meltaway® Bars are sold in white plastic packaging featuring the brand name, product name, and an image of the Cappuccino Meltaway® Bar. The treat boxes are sold in blue cardboard boxes with white snowflakes. The expiration dates for the recalled products are August 27, 2025; October 16, 2025; and November 25, 2025.

Gardners Candies distributed the recalled treats to distributors and retailers throughout the United States. Customers purchased the product starting in September 2024 in stores and through the company’s website, www.GardnersCandies.com.

Thus far, Gardners Candies has not received any reports of illness or injury connected to the recalled products. The company stopped production immediately upon learning that cashews were not listed on the packaging for the recalled products. After an investigation, they determined that a packaging error was responsible for the issue. It’s unclear how Gardners Candies became aware of the issue, but the company is taking the necessary steps to ensure that all allergens will be included in the ingredient list when production resumes.

According to New York Allergy and Sinus Centers, an allergy to cashews is particularly serious because “about 74% of people allergic to cashews experience anaphylaxis, even if the exposure was minimal.” Around 20% of people with an allergy to any type of tree nut are allergic to cashews. Companies are required to indicate the presence of tree nuts in foods because left untreated, anaphylactic reactions can be fatal.

Gardners Candies encourages anyone who may have purchased a recalled product to contact them for a replacement. The company can be reached Monday through Friday from  7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. EST at 1-800-242-2639.
