FDA Warns – Ongoing Listeria outbreak prompts recall of Lyons Magnus ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial nutritional shakes

In conjunction with the FDA, Lyons Magnus of California is recalling several flavors of their supplemental shakes in response to an ongoing outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes. The announcement follows the lead of an earlier recall initiated by the manufacturer of the shakes, Prairie Farms Dairy of Indiana.

Lyons Magnus distributed the recalled nutritional shakes to long-term care facilities throughout the United States under both the Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial brand names. The ReadyCare products specified in the recall include the ReadyCare Frozen Vanilla Shake (#1733), ReadyCare Frozen Chocolate Shake (#1734), ReadyCare Frozen Strawberry Shake (#1735), ReadyCare Frozen Vanilla Shake NSA (#1736), ReadyCare Frozen Strawberry Shake NSA (#1737), ReadyCare Frozen Chocolate Shake Plus (#1747), ReadyCare Frozen Strawberry Shake Plus (#1749), ReadyCare Frozen Vanilla Shake Plus (1754), ReadyCare Frozen Strawberry Banana Shake NSA (#1844), and the ReadyCare Frozen Chocolate Shake NSA (#3633). All of the ReadyCare shakes have a “Best Buy” date of 02/21/25 to 02/21/26. The Imperial brand shakes listed in the recall are the Imperial Frozen Vanilla Shake (#3338), Imperial Frozen Chocolate Shake (#3339), Imperial Frozen Strawberry Shake (#3340), Imperial Frozen Vanilla Shake NSA (#3341), Imperial Frozen Strawberry Shake NSA (#3342), Imperial Frozen Strawberry Banana Shake NSA (#3364), and the Imperial Frozen Chocolate Shake NSA (#3369). The Imperial shakes also have a “Best Buy” date of 02/21/25 to 02/21/26. Customers can find the item number and “Best by” date printed on the top of each 4-ounce carton.

The recalled shakes were not sold through retail outlets and have been removed from distribution to long-term care facilities. Additionally, as the investigation into the outbreak continues, Lyons Magnus is not currently purchasing products from Prairie Farms Dairy of Indiana.

As of February 22nd, the FDA has received reports of 11 deaths and at least 33 illnesses linked to the current outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes. It’s unclear how many of these deaths and illnesses are connected specifically to the Lyons Magnus recall. According to The New York Times, the outbreak began in 2018 and has persisted through the present day, with infections reported in at least 21 states in the U.S.

In healthy people, infection with Listeria typically causes self-limiting symptoms that might include nausea, vomiting, fever, gastrointestinal pain, diarrhea, and stiffness. Infections can be life-threatening for the elderly, very young children, or people who are immunocompromised due to disease, medication, or some other reason. Additionally, in pregnant women, Listeria infection can cause miscarriage and stillbirth.

Lyons Magnus advises consumers to refrain from consuming the recalled shakes. Anyone in possession of a recalled shake should quarantine the product.
