The discovery of undeclared almond flour has prompted One Roof, LLC., better known as Atwater’s, to recall specific batches of their Spider Web Tarts. The FDA published notice of the recall on October 28, 2024.
Atwater’s distributed the tarts on October 19th and 20th at eight farmers markets in three Mid-Atlantic states, including Maryland, Washington D.C., and Virginia. The following is a list of markets at which the Atwater’s sold their Spider Web Tarts:
- Arlington Courthouse
- Dupont Circle
- Falls Church
- Greenbelt
- H Street
- Mount Pleasant
- Silver Spring
- Westover
The tarts are sold in clear wrappers with a tan label featuring the image of a Ouija board, a sun, moon, and two ghosts. The label reads, “Atwater’s Spider Web Tart,” and includes a list of product ingredients. Customers can look for the Julian date of 292 on the bottom of the package to identify the recalled items.
While the company has not received any reports of illness or allergic reaction linked to the recalled Spider Web Tarts, there is a risk of reaction for those with tree nut allergies. Atwater’s determined that the recalled tarts were mislabeled to appear as though they are free of tree nuts when they actually contain almond flour. The company points to production errors as the cause of the labelling issue.
According to WebMD, tree nut allergies are common for both kids and adults. Companies are required in the United States to list tree nut ingredients on their products. Symptoms of an allergic reaction might include skin rash; congestion; itching and swelling of the mouth, throat, nose, and eyes; gastrointestinal pain, including nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting; and difficulty swallowing, which can result in anaphylaxis. Left untreated, anaphylaxis can cause death.
Atwater’s urges customers who may have purchased a recalled Spider Web Tart to contact the company directly for a refund.
The company is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (EST) at 410-644- 3435 or by email at info@atwatersfood.com.
