FDA Warns – New York Wholesale Group recalls Zaarah Herbals Shatavari Powder after testing finds elevated lead levels

New York Wholesale Group out of Hicksville has announced a recall of their Zaarah Herbals Shatavari Powder after testing detected potentially dangerous levels of lead in the product. According to the FDA, the company initiated the recall on Monday.

The Universal Product Code for the Zaarah Herbals Shatavari Powder is 63502899940, and the impacted Batch Number is SR 04 with a Manufactured Date of July, 2022. New York Wholesale Group distributed the product between the dates of October 21, 2022 and April 15, 2024 to retailers in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The product comes packaged in a clear, 3.5-ouce jar with a gold lid and green accents on the label. The label includes the brand and product names and purports to contain “100% Asparagus racemosus.” Customers can find the UPC, Batch Number, and Manfuctured Date printed on the back of the jar.

According to WebMD, shatavari powder is an Ayurvedic remedy, marketed for a variety of health benefits, including but not limited to treating ulcers, fighting and preventing viral infections, boosting lactation, balancing hormones, easing the symptoms of menopause, and providing antioxidant protection. Research on the effects of the herb on humans is limited, and like all dietary supplements, shatavari powder is not regulated as carefully as FDA-approved medications.

As of the the date of the recall, New York Wholesale Group has not received any reports of illness or injury linked to their Zaarah Herbals Shatavari Powder. The company announced the recall after the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection; Food & Standards Division tested the product and detected elevated levels of lead.

Exposure to lead over an extended period of time and at certain levels can cause a variety of health problems, including “kidney dysfunction, hypertension, increased risk of mortality from cardiovascular disease, and neurocognitive effects” (FDA). Additionally, lead exposure can cause significant damage to the nervous system of a developing fetus.

New York Wholesale Group urges customers who may have purchased this product to stop use immediately and to return the product to the point of purchase for a full refund.
