FDA warns – New Seasons Market recalls Strawberry Rhubarb Bakewell Tart due to undeclared almonds

Portland, Oregon-based New Seasons Market has recalled its Strawberry Rhubarb Bakewell Tart because it contains almond, an allergen not declared on the product ingredient list.

Individuals who live with an allergy or sensitivity to almond are advised against consuming the product to avoid the risk of a major or life-threatening allergic reaction.

Initiated by the company on June 4, 2024, the recall covers Strawberry Rhubarb Bakewell Tarts under all “best if used by” dates. The now-recalled products were made available for purchase between March 22, 24 and June 3, 2024, at the Bakery and Pastry departments of New Seasons Market stores across Oregon and Washington.

As indicated in the image featured in the FDA announcement, the product, which has a five-day shelf life, comes packaged in plastic clamshell containers bearing a New Seasons Market scale labels in black and white.

The potential inclusion of almond in the Strawberry Rhubarb Bakewell Tart was brought to the manufacturer’s attention after a staff member who consumed the product experienced a mild reaction. Further investigation later confirmed the presence of almond flour in the product, despite the lack of disclosure in the ingredient panel.

While New Seasons Market has not received other reports of allergic reactions or sensitivities following the initial incident to date, the company announced the recall because of the mislabeling.

Anyone with an almond sensitivity who may have purchased a Strawberry Rhubarb Bakewell Tart under any best-by date, or who may have it in their possession, is asked to discard the product. Those seeking a refund should contact a manager at their local New Seasons Market store.

Further questions may be directed to the company via email at talktous@newseasonsmarket.com. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pacific Time.
