According to the FDA, Los Angeles, California-based Backstage Center has recalled about 280 bottles of Alipotec Raiz de Tejocote dietary supplements bearing the “Alipotec King” sticker after an FDA analysis revealed the product was positive for yellow oleander, a known toxin.
A hazard statement issued in the February 20, 2024 announcement warns consumers that the presence of yellow oleander, in place of tejocote, may result in a a number of major “neurologic, gastrointestinal, and cardiovascular” health consequences. Symptoms of yellow oleander poisoning has the potential to turn serious or fatal. Anyone experiencing “nausea, vomiting, dizziness, diarrhea, abdominal pain, cardiac dysrhythmia” and other symptoms after ingesting the product should consult their medical provider immediately.
Distributed exclusively on Amazon.com dating back to September 15, 2023, the recall covers about 280 bottles of Alipotec King Alipotec Raiz de Tejocote. Each white cylindrical bottle with a green top contains about 30 granules and weighs a total of 0.35 ounces. Affected bottles bear Lot Code “238124” and an expiration date of “08-2027”.
While the company has not been alerted to any reports of injury or adverse health effects related to the recall to date, consumers are urged to immediately stop all use of the product.
