FDA warns – Nature’s Wonder Mung Bean Sprouts recalled by Chang Farm due to Listeria contamination

According to the FDA, Wheatley, Massachusetts-based Chang Farm has recalled its 12-ounce packages of Nature’s Wonder Mung Bean Sprouts, under sell-by date December 13, 2023, because it contains a trace of Listeria monocytogenes (L. Monocytogenes).

While healthy people with a Listeria infection may only experience short-lived symptoms like “high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea,” the organism could cause pregnant women to suffer miscarriages or stillbirths. Listeria infections can also turn serious and sometimes fatal in those with weakened immune systems, including young children and frail and elderly individuals.

Announced by Chang Farm on December 15, 2023, the recall covers products that were distributed and made available at retail stores and by wholesale partners across Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and Maryland.

As seen in the product photo included in the FDA announcement, Nature’s Wonder Premium Bean Sprouts are packaged in 12-ounce plastic bags with a printed “Sell By” date of December 13th, 2023, which appears as “12/13” on the back, within the white box.

Officials were first made aware of the problem after a random sample collected and analyzed by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also conducted an analysis of the sample, which confirmed the results from VDACS. To find the origin of the problem, Chang Farm initiated its own investigation.

The company urges all retail and wholesale partners in possession of the affected lot in the above U.S. states to remove the product from store shelves. Consumers who may have purchased a now-recalled product are asked to dispose of the item, or return it to the place of purchase to receive a total refund.

Anyone who has health concerns or who is experiencing related symptoms should consult their healthcare provider.

Further questions may be directed at Chang Farm at 413-522-0234 or 413-222-5519, where representatives can be reached 24 hours of the day Eastern Time, from Monday through Sunday.
