According to the FDA, Great Value Organic Black Chia Seeds, in 32-ounce packages, has been voluntarily recalled by Natural Sourcing International because some of the products may be contaminated with the organism Salmonella.
Although healthy people with a Salmonella infection typically experience short-lived symptoms like fever, (possibly bloody) diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and pain of the abdomen, those with weakened immune systems, such as young children and elderly individuals, are at risk of more serious, fatal infections. The infection may, in rare cases when the organism enters the bloodstream, result in the more advance illnesses like “arterial infections (i.e. infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
Natural Sourcing International officials initiated the recall on May 10, 2024, out of an abundance of caution even as the company has not received any reports of adverse events related to the problem to date.
Consumers are advised to discard any products matching the following description:
- Name: Great Value Organic Black Chia Seeds
- Size: 32 oz.
- Lot Code: 24095 C018
- Expiration Date: October 30, 2026
- UPC: 078742300665
Distributed to Walmart retail venues across the U.S., the product can be recognized by its main label on the front of the pouch, and by the lot number printed on the bottom of the packaging’s back panel, as pictured in the FDA announcement.
