The FDA recently announced the recall of MXBBB’s UMARY Hyaluronic Acid tablets after laboratory testing detected two unlisted drugs in the supplement. MXBBB initiated the recall of 321 units of the supplement on Thursday, November 21st.
The recalled supplement was distributed to customers across the United States via Amazon. UMARY Hyaluronic Acid tablets are sold in a blue, white, and black plastic bottle with white lettering. Each bottle contains 30 caplets, and each caplet consists of 850 mg of hyaluronic acid. The UPC for the product is 7502265120323 with a lot number of 24183 and an expiration date of July 1, 2028.
According to Cleveland Clinic, people use hyaluronic acid supplements for a variety of purposes, including joint health, wound healing, bladder pain, and respiratory issues. These supplements can often be taken safely, but users should always talk to their doctors before adding a supplement to their health regimen.
MXBB has not received any reports of illness or injury linked to their UMARY Hyaluronic Acid tablets. The company recalled the supplement after FDA testing detected both diclofenac and omeprazole in the supplement. As noted by the FDA, diclofenac is a type of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is only available by prescription in the United States. NSAID drugs can interact with other medications and can have a variety of negative side effects, such as “gastrointestinal damage, including bleeding, ulceration,” and in very extreme cases, “fatal perforation of the stomach and intestines.” Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), available over-the-counter for the treatment of heartburn. Side effects of the drug can include “serious skin reactions, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and headaches.” And as with diclofenac, omeprazole can negatively interact with other medications and supplements.
