Monkey Spit, LLC out of California is recalling three varieties of their barbecue sauces after an FDA investigation identified three undeclared allergens in the products. The FDA announced the recall last Friday, January 17th.
The products included in Monkey Spit’s recall include their Monkey Mop BBQ Sauce with a “Best buy” date of 11/07/2026, their Swamp Mob BBQ Sauce with a “Best buy” date of 12/13/2025, and their Atomic Mop BBQ Sauce with a “Best buy” date of 03/19/2026. The company cited undeclared milk in the Monkey Mop sauce, undeclared soy in the Swamp Mob sauce, and undeclared milk and wheat in the Atomic Mop sauce. All three sauces are sold in 12-ounce glass bottles with colorful labels featuring the brand name, product name, and the image of a monkey with human features. Monkey Spit distributed the products via their website and to retailers along the central coast of California.
As of the date of the recall, Monkey Spit has not received any reports of illness linked to the impacted products. The company recalled the products after an FDA investigation, which discovered a packaging issue that led to the omission of three major allergens from the ingredient list. Monkey Spit has since halted all production and distribution of the sauces while working to remedy the problem.
As noted by FoodAllergy.Org, because allergies to milk, soy, and wheat are so common, food companies are required to list these ingredients on their labels. While they are three distinct allergies, reactions to soy, milk, and wheat can all cause anaphylaxis, which can be fatal if left untreated. More commonly, allergic reactions to these ingredients cause symptoms such as gastrointestinal upset, bloody stool, congestion, skin rash, and swelling of the mouth and lips. Labelling food products is essential to preventing potentially dangerous allergic reactions.
Monkey Spit, LLC urges customers to return all recalled bottles of barbecue sauce to the point of purchase for a full refund.
Anyone with questions or concerns about the recall can contact the company Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PST at 1-714-514-8445 or by email at karen@monkeyspithotsauce.com.
