FDA warns – Milo’s Poultry Farms, LLC. recalls all sizes and types of eggs due to Salmonella contamination linked to outbreak

The FDA recently notified the public of a comprehensive egg recall for all eggs produced by Milo’s Poultry Farms, LLC. out of Wisconsin. The company announced the recall after officials detected Salmonella in samples taken from the environment where the eggs are produced.

Milo’s Poultry Farms, LLC. initiated the recall on September 6, 2024. Eggs included in the recall were distributed through grocery and retail stores in three states — Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Customers and retailers do not need to check lot numbers, as the recall applies to all eggs on the market produced by Milo’s Poultry Farms, LLC. All expiration dates are also included.

The recalled products are sold in gray cartons with either red or dark gray lettering. The name on the cartons will either read “Milo’s Poultry Farms” or “Tony’s Fresh Market.” The 6-, 12-, and 18-count sizes are included in the recall, as are all types of eggs sold with the “Milo’s” and “Tony’s” brand names (e.g. conventional, organic, etc.).

As noted by the CDC, a Salmonella infection typically happens when a person eats food contaminated with the bacteria or drinks contaminated water. Infections are also spread through contact with animals and animal feces or in environments where animals are raised. The infection can be particularly dangerous for young children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems. The most common symptoms of infection include “diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps,” but more serious symptoms and complications can occur.

According to NPR, the FDA has received 65 reports of illness linked to contaminated eggs produced by Milo’s Poultry Farms, LLC. Reports of illness peaked from late May into the first part of August. While no fatalities have occurred thus far, 24 people required hospitalization after consuming the product.

As the investigation continues, Milo’s Poultry Farms, LLC. had ceased production. The company plans to locate and eradicate the source of contamination by following appropriate sanitation practices.

Customers and retailers who have purchased eggs produced by Milo’s Poultry Farms should not consume the product.
