Los Angeles, California-based World Variety Produce, Inc. has recalled Melissa’s Kimchi Hot 14 oz because it contains fish, an allergen not listed on the product’s ingredient panel.
Individuals with a fish allergy or sensitivity could suffer a range of allergic reactions. Milder symptoms include hives and lip swelling, while the more severe and life-threatening symptoms, known as anaphylaxis, may include shock and respiratory issues that turn fatal.
Announced by World Variety Produce, Inc. on January 5, 2024, the recall covers 124 cases of Kimchi Hot 14 oz bearing “Best By” date “03-15-2024,” and a “product of USA” label.
Affected products were made available for purchase only at Sun International stores throughout Florida, Brookshire Brothers stores within Texas, and the OK Produce – Grocery Outlet in California. The 14-ounce containers were sold via bulk displays from December 15, 2023 to December 21, 2023.
The mislabeling first came to attention internally, when a product artwork review conducted by Melissa’s Design/Artwork department showed that the printed artwork failed to include fish in the allergen listing. Since the discovery, all production and distribution of the product has been suspended pending a joint investigation with the FDA.
Consumers who may have purchased an affected product are encouraged to return the item to the point of purchase to receive a total refund. Further questions may be directed at World Variety Produce, Inc. at 1-800-588-0151. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
