New York, New York-based BonBon – A Swedish Candy Co. has recalled all Marabou Sea Salt chocolate bars after batches of the product were found to contain almonds, wheat, and nuts–major allergens not sufficiently disclosed on the packaging’s ingredient label, according to the FDA.
To avoid serious, potentially life-threatening allergic reactions, people who live with an allergy or severe sensitivity to almonds, wheat, or other nuts are advised against consuming the product.
Initiated by BonBon on August 2, 2024, officials say the recall affects all Marabou Sea Salt products that were made available at BonBon’s three New York City retail locations, as well as those distributed with other imported goods. The impacted NYC stores are as follows:
- 130 Allen Street
- 1220 Lexington Avenue
- 705 Driggs Avenue
A finished Marabou Sea Salt chocolate bar product comes flat and measures 9-inches by 4-inches, weighing 185 grams. It is wrapped in yellow plastic packaging with the ‘Marabou’ trademark font and logo prominently displayed in red, along with the word ‘havvsalt’–Swedish for ‘sea salt.’ Affected expiration dates and production codes are “04.09.2024” and “09.11.2024,” as well as “OUV0134912” and “OUV0140643.”
The FDA announcement noted that the packaging only indicate that Marabou Sea Salt had “traces of nuts and wheat,” even as batches of the product revealed the presence of “almonds, wheat and nuts outside of its allergen profile.” BonBon’s distributor, Ert Godis, first alerted the company to their own recall on May 8, 2024; shortly after, all affected products were taken from store shelves and retail partners were instructed to have the items destroyed.
While BonBon has not been made aware of any related illness connected to the under-labeling to date, consumers who may be in possession of a recalled Marabou Sea Salt chocolate bar and who would like a complete refund are instructed to take the item back to the point of purchase. Otherwise, the item should not be consumed, especially by those with a sensitivity to any of the above allergens.
Recall-related questions and concerns may be directed to the company at 212-786-0094. Calls are monitored Monday through Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. Eastern Time.
