FDA warns – Lunds & Byerlys recalls 2 lots of L&B Lone Start Dip after discovery of possible mold contamination

The FDA recently notified the public of Lunds & Byerlys recall of two lots of their L&B Lone Star Dip after detection of mold in the product. The company announced the recall on Friday, October 4th.

The impacted product has a UPC of 18169-74197 and was sold and distributed to the 29 Lunds & Byerlys retail stores in the greater Twin Cities area of Minnesota. The recalled lots of L&B Lone Star Dip have expiration dates of 10-15-24 and 10-17-24 and are sold in 12 oz. plastic containers. The label on the top of the container includes the company name and the name of the product.

Lunds & Byerlys recalled the product after receiving reports from store employees of possible mold contamination in the dip. So far, the company has not received any reports of illness or death in connection to the recalled lots of Lone Start Dip. It’s not yet clear what caused the mold contamination in the product.

According to to USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, some molds on food are harmless, while others can cause “allergic reactions and respiratory problems,” and it can be very difficult to know which molds are safe and which are dangerous. Additionally, while mold may only be visible on the surface of a food product, mold often sends roots into the layers of food below. It is often safer to discard moldy food than to attempt recovery of the portion that appears unaffected.

Lunds & Byerlys urges customers who may have purchased the L&B Lone Start Dip from the affected lots to return the product for a refund or dispose of it immediately. The company advises that no receipt is needed to return the product to the point of purchase.

Anyone with questions about the recall can call Lunds & Byerlys at 952-548-1400, Monday through Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
