Minneapolis Minnesota-based Metro Produce Distributors Inc. has recalled all Lunds & Byerlys-branded fresh guacamole products under use-by date August 2, 2024, after a routine sampling conducted by the company indicated that the finished products may have traces of Listeria monocytogenes, reports the FDA.
Although healthy people infected with the organism may only experience “high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea,” and other short-lived symptoms, those with weakened immune systems–such as young children and elderly individuals–have been known to suffer more serious, and even fatal, infections. Pregnant women infected with Listeria are at higher risks of miscarriages and stillbirths.
Announced by Metro Produce Distributors Inc. on August 2, 2024, the voluntary recall covers five varieties of Lunds & Byerlys fresh guacamole products that were made available for purchase at Lunds & Byerlys grocery stores in the Twin Cities area, as well as St. Cloud. They were also sold at select ‘Taco Mas’ food bas between July 27 and July 31. Packaged in clear plastic containers of various sizes, the finished products are stamped with “Use-by” date August 2, 2024.
Consumers should note that the following products are impacted:
- Lunds & Byerlys Fresh Guacamole, 14 ounce
- Lunds & Byerlys Fresh Smokin’ Guacamole, 10 ounce
- Lunds & Byerlys Fresh Spicy Guacamole, 10 ounce
- Lunds & Byerlys Pico de Gallo/Guacamole Tray, 18 ounce
- Lunds & Byerlys Deli Guacamole, 56 ounce
The company says it halted all production and distribution of the products after routine sampling conducted internally gave officials reason to believe that the finished products may be contaminated with the bacteria. The FDA and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture have both since been alerted to the ongoing recall.
While Metro Produce Distributors Inc. has not received any confirmed reports of illness related to the recall, anyone who may have purchased a Lunds & Byerlys fresh guacamole product under use-by date August 2, 2024 should not consume it. The item should either by destroyed or brought back to a local Lunds & Byerlys store for a complete refund. Further questions may be directed to Metro Produce at 612-436-3825.
