FDA warns – Listeria contamination at production facility leads Savencia Cheese USA to recall 7 lots of soft-ripened cheese

Last Monday, a major cheese manufacturer out of Pennsylvania recalled several varieties of soft-ripened cheeses after testing confirmed Listeria contamination in a production facility. According to the FDA, the recall applied to seven lots total of cheese sold under various brand names.

Savencia Cheese USA included the following specific items in the recall: Aldi Emporium Selection Brie, 12/8oz Brie (UPC # 4099100084016); Supreme Oval 7oz, 6/7oz (UPC # 071448504214, Case # 10071448504211); La Bonne Vie Brie, 6/8oz (No UPC provided, Case # 10820581678538); La Bonne Vie Camember, 6/8oz (No UPC provided, Case # 10820581678613); 12/8oz Industrial Brie (UPC # 077901005229, Case # 10077901005226); Market Basket Brie 6/8oz (UPC # 049705666302, Case # 10049705666309); and Glenview Farms Spreadable Brie, 2/3lb (No UPC provided, Case # 50758108712312). For all recalled cheeses except for the Glenview Farms Spreadable Brie, the “Best By” date is 12/24/2024, and the date of manufacture is 9/30/2024. For the Glenview Farms Spreadable Brie, the “Best By” date is 1/13/2025, and the date of manufacture is 10/15/2024.

Thus far, Savencia Cheese USA has not received any reports of illness or injury linked to consumption or handling of the recalled cheeses. The company initiated the recall after testing found evidence of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes on the production equipment at the “Lena manufacturing facility.”

While Listeria infection is unlikely to cause significant illness in healthy individuals, it can be dangerous for very young children, the elderly, and people who are immunocompromised. According to Mayo Clinic, the most common symptoms are fever, musculoskeletal pain, and gastrointestinal upset, including nausea and diarrhea. More concerning symptoms might include confusion, neck stiffness, headache, and convulsions. In pregant women, listeria infection can cause miscarriage or stillbirth.

Retailers of the recalled cheeses have removed the products from their shelves. Customers can identify a recalled product by consulting the UPC codes and “Best By” dates printed on the cheese label. All recalled products can be returned to the store at which they were purchased for a full refund.

Anyone with questions or concerns about the recall can contact the Consumer Relations Department at Savencia Cheese USA at (800)-322-2743 or by email at sc.customer.service@savencia.com.
