Wiers Farm, Inc., of Willard, Ohio, has announced a limited recall of whole cucumbers (under pack date June 5, 2024) and bagged salad cucumbers (under pack dates June 5 and 6, 2024) because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, reports the FDA.
Consumers should note that the product was grown and harvested by another entity, then sourced, handled and distributed by Wiers Farm. The company, which is coordinating the recall with regulatory officials, was first alerted to the potential contamination after the discovery was made during routine sampling conducted by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD).
Distributed to select Walmart stores across Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio, the following products are covered by the recall:
- Whole Cucumbers
- Size: 1.5-2.5 inch diameter, 6-9 inch length
- Wiers Farm 2 lb bagged Salad Cucumber
- Packaging: clear bag with blue base
Those who are exposed to the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes are at risk for developing listeriosis, which may be experienced in a range of symptoms depending on how advanced the illness, and may run its course in a few days or up to several weeks. Anyone who has consumed an affected product and who is experiencing “fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues” is advised to consult their medical provider.
While the company has not received any reports of related illnesses or other complaints to date, and though the product’s shelf life has since expired, those who may have purchased products matching the above descriptions should dispose of the items. Consumers may contact the company with further questions and concerns at (419) 933-2161, or via email at customercare@wiersfarm.com.
