FDA warns – Limited number of 4oz Planters® Honey Roasted Peanuts, 8.75oz Planters® Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts due to potential trace of Listeria

Hormel Food Sales, LLC, of Austin, Minnesota, has recalled a number of its 4-ounce packages of Planters® Honey Roasted Peanuts and its 8.75-ounce cans of Planters® Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts because the products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, reports the FDA.

While healthy people infected with Listeria typically experience short-lived symptoms like “high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea,” those with weakened immune systems, such as young children and elderly people, are at risk of more serious, potentially fatal infections. In pregnant women, the organism has also been known to lead to miscarriages and stillbirths.

Officials say the voluntarily recalled products were produced at a specific facility in April and then distributed to Publix distribution warehouses in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and North Carolina, as well as to Dollar Tree distribution warehouses across South Carolina and Georgia.

Consumers are advised to either discard or return the following affected products, which, on the Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nuts can, can be identified by the “Best if Used By Date” printed on the bottom and the UPC (Universal Product Code) printed on the side:

  • Planters® Honey Roasted Peanuts
    • UPC 2900002097
    • Best if Used By: 04 11 25
  • Planters® Deluxe Lightly Salted Mixed Nutes
    • UPC 2900001621
    • Best if Used By 05APR26

The recall only covers the two specific varieties of products listed above, and no other Planters®-branded products in other sizers, varieties, or packaging styles.

As of the FDA announcement posted May 3, 2024, the company has not been made aware of any illnesses connected to the recall, but all impacted retailers have been alerted of the issue, and the FDA continues to monitor the recall.

Consumers are encouraged to direct any further questions to the Hormel Foods Customer Relations team using the email or chat details listed in the FDA announcement, or by phone at 1-800-523-4635. Representatives are available Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Central Time, except on national holidays.
