FDA warns – “Lian Sheng Dried Tangerine Plum” recalled by Rong Shing Trading NY Inc. due to undeclared sulfites

Brooklyn, New York-based Rong Shing Trading NY Inc. has recalled all packages of its 4.7oz (135g) “Lian Sheng Dried Tangerine Plum” after learning that the product contains sulfites, an allergen not declared in its ingredient statement.

Individuals who live with a severe sensitivity to sulfites are advised against consuming the product, as they could suffer a major, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.

Distributed and made available for purchase in retail stores across Florida and New York, “Lian Sheng Dried Tangerine Plum” comes in a 4.7-ounce (135-gram), clear plastic bottle, as seen in the photo attached to the FDA announcement. The product comes under UPC (Universal Product Code) 6928580580214. The sides of affected bottles bear a stamped expiration date of “05/31/2023)”.

A routine sampling conducted by Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, in addition to a follow-up analysis carried out by the company’s Food Laboratory personnel, demonstrated that the 4.7oz packages contained sulfites, which were not listed on the product label. The discovery prompted officials to initiate a recall, as individuals with a sulfite sensitivity could experience a reaction if they consume 10 milligrams or more of the allergen. At 21.91 milligrams of sulfites per serving, the Dried Tangerine Plum present more than two times the risk of a reaction.

Although Rong Shing Trading NY Inc. has not received any reports of allergic reactions or illnesses in connection to the issue, consumers with affected 4.7oz (135g) packages of the product are urged to refrain from eating it. The item should either be discarded or returned to the point of purchase for a total refund. Further questions may be directed to the company by calling 718-308-1177.
