On Thursday, JE Bakery 2019 out of Minnesota issued a recall of their 6-Count Raisin Bran Muffins due to a labelling error. According to the FDA, the recalled product contains undeclared walnuts, which is a known allergen.
JE Bakery 2019, better known as Broadway Bakery, markets their Raisin Bran Muffins (UPC # UPC 0 29341-00233) under the brand names of Cub Foods, Jerry’s Foods, and Country Market. The product was distributed to retail outlets in the Twin Cities area. All three brands have a “Sell By” date of 02/18/25. The muffins sold under the Cub brand feature a black and red label with white lettering. The label for the Jerry’s Foods product is green, red, blue, and white. The Country Market label includes bold red lettering, the image of three acorns, and the illusion of a wood paneled background.
As of February 13th, JE Bakery has not received an reports of illness or allergic reaction linked to the recalled product. A grocery store employee reported to the company that the Glorious Morning Muffins were incorrectly labeled as Raisin Bran Muffins. The latter muffin does not contain walnuts, while the Glorious Morning Muffins do. For this reason, the recalled batch of muffins are likely to cause allergic reactions in customers with a walnut allergy or sensitivity.
According to Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE), nut allergies are common for all age groups. Symptoms of an allergic reaction often include gastrointestinal upset, skin rash, swelling of the lips and mouth, and congestion. In some instances, an allergic reaction to tree nuts can cause anaphylaxis. Without prompt administration of epinephrine, anaphylaxis can be fatal. Because allergic reactions can be so severe, the government requires food manufacturers to list all tree nut ingredients on their product labels.
JE Bakery has alerted retailers to the recall, and the impacted product has been removed from all grocery shelves. Customers who purchased the recalled Raisin Bran Muffins with a “Sell By” date of 02/18/2025 should return them to the point of purchase for a full refund.
