FDA warns – Jack and the Green Sprouts, Inc., recalls two lots of alfalfa sprouts after sampling detects Listeria

The Wisconsin-based company Jack and the Green Sprouts, Inc., is recalling two lots of its Alfalfa and Alfalfa Onion sprouts due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. According to the FDA, the company announced the recall on October 4th.

The recalled products are sold in plastic, 5-ounce containers. The label on the top of the package includes the company’s name and the slogan, “Without any doubts, excellent sprouts!” The UPC code is also included on the top label along with the lot number, which is affixed to the package on a white sticker.

The two lots included in the recall are Lot # 300 with a UPC of 763247198915 and Lot # 246 with a UPC of 763247195945. Jack and the Green Sprouts distributed the products to grocery stores and Co-ops in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. The dates of distribution are unclear, but the company says the recall applies to both the regular alfalfa sprouts and the alfalfa and onion sprouts.

The recall was initiated after the company’s routine sampling program detected Listeria monocytogenes in the indicated lots of sprouts. While no illnesses have been reported thus far, the company has stopped all production and distribution while investigating to find the source of the contamination. Production and distribution will commence when the source has been identified and resolved.

According to the CDC, infection with listeria bacteria is uncommon but can be dangerous for immunocompromised people, the elderly, babies, and pregnant women. In the latter group, infection can lead to “miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or life-threatening infection of the newborn.” In the general population, symptoms of listeria infection can include stomach upset, headache, fever, and other flu-like complaints. Treatment with antibiotics is sometimes necessary if the infection becomes invasive.

Jack and the Green Sprouts, Inc., urges customers to dispose of the recalled sprouts or return them to the point of purchase for a refund.

Anyone with questions about the recall can reach the company from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 715-425-9495.
