Two weeks ago, Jose Madrid Salsa announced a recall of three lots of its Chipotle Con Queso Salsa after an inspection detected Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 in the product. The FDA published notice of the company’s recall on Friday, December 20th.
Jose Madrid Salsa packages their Chipotle Con Queso Salsa in a 13-ounce glass jar with a white, black, and yellow label featuring the brand name, product name, and the image of a man riding a horse. The lot numbers included in the recall are 6012201102327, 6012201103027, 6012201111227. The UPC for Chipotle Con Queso Salsa is 093662452935. Customers can locate the lot code for the product on the lid of the jar.
The recalled product was sold at events in Hamburg (NY), Syracuse (NC), and Greensboro (NC) during the month of November. The events are as follows:
- Christmas in the Country, Hamburg (NY), November 7-10
- Syracuse Holiday Shoppes, Syracuse (NY), November 8-10
- Greensboro Holiday Market, Greensboro (NC), November 15-17
It’s unclear if the company sold additional lots of Chipotle Con Queso Salsa at these events aside from the lots included in the recall. For this reason, any person who purchased the product at one of these events should compare the lot number printed on their jar of salsa with the lot numbers included in the recall.
Thus far, Jose Madrid Salsa has not received any reports of illness or allergic reaction connected to the recalled product. The company initiated the recall after the Ohio Department of Agriculture performed a routine inspection of the production facility and detected Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 in the affected lots of salsa. The labels for the recalled lots do not list Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 with the other ingredients. Jose Madrid Salsa attributes the issue to “a temporary breakdown in the company’s production and packaging processes.”
According to the FDA, reactions to approved food dyes, such as Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 are rare but can occur in individuals with sensitivities to artificial dyes. Yellow 5, for example, can “cause itching and hives in some people.” Because such sensitivities are possible, the FDA requires companies to list all color additives on their product labels.
Jose Madrid Salsa advises that the recalled products should not be consumed by anyone with a sensitivity to Yellow 5 or Yellow 6.
Anyone with questions or concerns about the recall can contact the company Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (EST) at 740-521-4304 or by email at mike@josemadridsalsa.com.
