According to the FDA, IHA Beverage out of California has issued a recall for its Super Cinnamon Powder (4oz) after lab testing found elevated levels of lead in the product. The company issued the recall on Monday, November 18th.
Super Brand Dried Cinnamon Powder is sold in a clear plastic bag with red lettering and the image of an archer. The UPC # for the product is 610232012476. The back of the 4-ounce bag features an alert that reads “WARNING: Cancer and Reproductive Harm,” and references California Proposition 65. IHA Beverage distributed the product to retailers in the state of California and to a few other retailers in the U.S.
IHA Beverage has not received any reports of illness or injury thus far in connection to the Super Brand Dried Cinnamon Powder. The company initiated the recall based on the results of lead testing performed by the Arkansas Department of Health. The company has paused production of the product to launch an investigation into the source of the lead contamination in the cinnamon.
According to the CDC, exposure to lead can cause immediate and long-term effects, including brain damage, delayed growth, learning delays, speech impairment, attention difficulties, reduced IQ, and academic challenges. Exposure can be risky for everyone, but it is particularly dangerous for children under the age of six because they are undergoing rapid physical and emotional growth.
IHA Beverage advises customers who purchased the recalled product to throw it away or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Anyone with questions or concerns about the recall can contact IHA Beverage Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (PST) at 323-724-8551.
