FDA warns – Ice Cream Sandwiches, Gelato produced by Belgian Yummies contains multiple undeclared allergens

Consumers are advised that multiple undeclared allergens have been identified in the 4-ounce packages of ice cream sandwiches as well as the 5-liter containers and 4.75-liter pans of gelato produced by Belgian Yummies, of Fort Myers, Florida.

According to the FDA, the affected products can be found under the Belgian Yummies, Sofra, and Ria brands, with undeclared allergens that include wheat, soy, egg, coconut and/or peanuts, and FD&C Yellow #5.

To avoid the risk of an allergic reaction, individuals who are allergic or sensitive to any of the above ingredients are urged to avoid consuming the following items, which are listed with their corresponding allergens:

  • Belgian Yummies Sandwiches in Vanilla, Chocolate, Raspberry, Salted Caramel, Key Lime, and Peanut Butter flavors
    • contains undeclared wheat, soy, egg, coconut, and/or peanuts
  • Sofra Sandwiches in Vanilla and Chocolate flavors

  • Ria Sandwiches in Vanilla flavor

  • Belgian Yummies Gelato in Strawberry flavor

Initiated by Belgian Yummies on April 9, 2024, the recall covers the above ice cream sandwich and gelato products that were distributed across Florida via wholesale orders. Consumers should note that none of the affected products were made available for retail sale.

Packaged in 4-ounce, clear plastic or gold packages, the sandwiches bear an expiration date of 08/31/2024 stamped on the back. Affected gelato products in Strawberry and Birthday Cake flavors can be found in gray, 5-liter containers, while the Horchato gelato can be found in gray 4.75-liter pans bearing the expiration date of 08/31/2024.

Belgian Yummies first took action after a Florida Department of Agriculture inspection revealed the product had been distributed in packaging with outdated labels that failed to indicate the presence of wheat, soy, egg, coconut and/or peanuts, as well as FD&C Yellow #5.

Although the company has not received any reports of illness related to the mislabeling, officials immediately moved to correct the labels. Ingredient lists were then sent to all wholesale recipients of the above products.

Additional questions about the recall may be directed at Belgian Yummies at 1-239-202-8146, Monday through Thursday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Emails can also be set to belgianyummies@gmail.com.
