A positive test for Listeria monocytogenes has prompted HH Fresh Trading Corp of California to recall 480 cases of Taiwan Enoki mushrooms. The FDA announced the recall on Saturday, November 2nd.
The recall applies to HH Fresh Trading Enoki mushrooms sold at retail stores in West Virginia on August 20 and August 23, 2024. The UPC number for the product is 4711498860019. The 200-gram packages of mushrooms are sold in clear bags with a green and yellow label that reads “Enoki Mushroom Premium Quality.” Consumers can locate the UPC code for the recalled product on the back of the package.
While HH Fresh Trading has not received any reports of illness linked to the mushrooms, the company did receive notice from the FDA in October about a sample of the product that tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes on September 9, 2024. The company is not yet sure what caused the potential contamination, but they have stopped all production and distribution of Enoki mushrooms until the source can be found and eliminated.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, consumption of foods contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause an infection called listeriosis, which is likely to cause mild symptoms in healthy people. These symptoms might include headache; gastrointestinal upset, including nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting; fever; and muscle aches. Listeriosis can cause more serious infections in babies, small children, the elderly, and those who are immunocompromised. In more vulnerable populations, listeriosis can cause systemic infection, which can be fatal. In pregnant women, listeriosis can cause complications, including stillbirth and miscarriage.
HH Fresh Trading urges consumers who may have purchased the recalled Enoki mushrooms to return them to their point of purchase for a full refund.
Anyone with questions or concerns about the recall can contact HH Fresh Trading Corp of California from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., PST, at 1-262-365-9116.
