FDA warns – Helados Mexico Mini Cream Variety Pack recalled by Tropicale Foods due to risk of Salmonella contamination

5,224 units of Helados Mexico Mini Cream Variety Pack under best-by date 10/11/2025 has been recalled by Tropicale Foods, of Modesto, California, because the pack’s mango bars may contain traces of Salmonella, reports the FDA.

While the organism typically causes “fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain” in healthy individuals, a Salmonella infection could turn serious and sometimes fatal in those with weakened immune systems, including young children and elderly people. Officials warn that in rare cases that involve the organism entering the bloodstream, major illnesses like arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis may result.

Initiated by Tropicale Foods on March 30, 2024, the recall covers units of Helados Mexico Mini Cream Variety Pack that were distributed to retail venues across “Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virgina, Wisconsin, West Virgina, Washington, DC,” as well as a select number of places in Europe.

Consumers can identify impacted units from the best-by date printed at the bottom of each retail package, as demonstrated in the product photo attached to the FDA communication.

Officials say the product testing on finished mango bars revealed the presence of the Salmonella organism. Since the discovery, the company suspended all distribution of the affected product pending an investigation into the origin of the issue.

Although the Tropicale Foods has not received any reports of illness in connection to the problem to date, those in possession of an affected product are asked to discard it or otherwise refrain from consuming it. Further questions may be directed to the company at 909-563-3090, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Pacific time.
