FDA warns – Grand Central Bakery in Seattle and Portland recalls multiple items after discovery of undeclared egg

Grand Central Bakery in the Pacific Northwest is recalling several of their frozen pies and pre-made crusts due to the potential presence of undeclared eggs. The FDA published the notice on Saturday, October 26th, just one day after the company’s announcement.

The products listed in the recall include the U-Bake Pie Crust, U-Bake Apple Pie, U-Bake Marionberry Pie, and U-Bake Chicken Pot Pie, all of which were sold in Seattle and Portland between August 1 and October 20, 2024. The expiration dates printed on the product packaging for the affected lots fall between February 1, 2025 and April 20, 2025. Customers can locate the expiration date on a sticker affixed to the clear plastic wrapping on the product.

So far, Grand Central Bakery has not received any reports of illness in connection to the recalled products. The company issued the recall after receiving notice from an employee that egg had been used while making the affected products even though the packaging did not specify egg in the ingredient list. It’s unclear if the recall is related to a packaging error or a production error. In either case, consumption of the affected products could cause illness in people with an egg allergy or sensitivity.

The recalled products were distributed to and sold by four retail locations in the greater Seattle area, including Burien, Eastlake, Wallingford, and Wedgewood. In the Portland area, the products were sold at eight locations, including Beaumont, Cedar Mill, Hawthorne, Hillsboro, Mississippi, Multnomah Village, Sellwood, and Woodstock.

According to Cleveland Clinic, egg allergies are most common in children but can persist into adulthood. Consumption of eggs for those with an allergy can cause symptoms that range from mild to severe. Mild symptoms might include gastrointestinal upset, including nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea; skin rash; itching; or swelling of the oral cavity and/or throat. In more serious instances, an allergic reaction could cause anaphylaxis, which can be fatal when left untreated.

Customers who purchased one or more of the recalled products can contact Grand Central Bakery at retailfeedback@grandcentralbakery.com to arrange for a refund. Alternately, customer’s can visit the company’s website at https://www.grandcentralbakery.com.
