The FDA recently notified the public of the recall initiated by Grace Imports, LLC., of three lots of snack mixes after determining the product may contain undeclared wheat. At the end of August, a supplier notified the company that the asafetida, which is an herb used in Indian food, likely contains wheat. The packaging for the recalled batches does not list wheat as an ingredient.
The recall, announced on September 20, includes one lot of Kara Boondhi mix (250 g, UPC 8 904123 53706), one of the Kerala Mixture (300g, UPC 8 904123 500329), and one of the Spicy Murukku (250 g, UPC 8 904123 537103). The batch or lot numbers for the products are 2Al4B8, 2Al564, and 2Al504, and they all have a “Use By” date of 7/30/2025.
All three recalled products were distributed on August 20, 2024, to retail stores in the state of Georgia. The mixes are sold in white bags that read “a-1 Chips On the Go.” The batch numbers, “best by” dates, and UPCs are printed below the list of ingredients and nutritional information on the back of the bags.
While no illnesses have been reported so far, exposure to or consumption of wheat can be dangerous for people with a wheat allergy. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology, symptoms of wheat exposure for those with an allergy or sensitivity can include rash, congestion, stomach pain, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, asthma, and in the most extreme cases, anaphylaxis.
Grace Foods, LLC., asks that customers abstain from eating the snack mixes. Customers can discard of the mixes or attempt to return them to the point-of-purchase for a refund.
